Dak To and Vicinity
This part of the journey was very nostalgic. Dak To was made famous during the 1960s as the central location for three major battles between North Vietnamese forces and the U.S. Army.

Dak To was once a remote area consisting mainly of a couple Montagnard villages and a small Vietnamese village. Today, the Montagnards are all gone and the Vietnamese village has paved roads, sidewalks and a war memorial consisting of a statue, two armored vehicles and a replica of a Montagnard MeetingHouse.

The Dak To Airfield #2 (the most famous!) was the staging area for many of the U.S. Army's combat operations in the area. Now, the steel runway has been removed and the remaining hardpacked area is used to dry coffee beans.

While we were at the Dak To Airfield, we (the entire group of former soldiers) held a memorial service for comrades who died in the service of their country during the 1960s and 1970s.
